FFRC Praises Bipartisan Promoting Effective Forest Management Act: “It’s Time to Get Serious”
September 20, 2022: Today, Chairman Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Ranking Member John Barrasso (R-WY) introduced the bipartisan Effective Forest Management Act. FFRC Executive Director Bill Imbergamo issued the following statement:
“We applaud Chairman Manchin and Ranking Member Barrasso for setting clear expectations for forest management on our Federal forests. For the last decade, Congress has increasingly provided the tools and resources for the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to begin turning the tide on the fire and forest health crisis. Now it’s time to begin holding these agencies accountable for results.
The Effective Forest Management Act sets clear goals for the use of streamlined authorities and demands that the two land management agencies accurately report on effective steps to reduce the threat of wildfires. It also encourages forest managers to work their way up through the agency before moving into national leadership roles.
The bill also makes clear that unreserved forests – including mature forests – are available for management. Without opening a single new acre to harvest, this bill will encourage sustainable management of our National Forests and BLM lands.
Congress has addressed many of the concerns that Forest Service leaders have said were required to reverse the forest health and wildfire crisis on our public lands. The Effective Forest Management Act ensures that Forest Service leaders will be held accountable for using the authorities and resources Congress has provided.”
